Life Outside the Box program overlaps with the B.C. curriculum from Kindergarten – Grade 9. The following table shows how five competencies from Life Outside the Box map onto the “big ideas” from the Arts education curriculum.
Identity, voice, self and community.
- People create art to express who they are as individuals and community. (K)
- Creative expression develops our unique identity and voice. (Gr. 2)
- Creative expression is a means to explore and share one’s identity within a community. (Gr. 4)
- Engaging in creative expression and experiences expands people’s sense of identity and belonging. (Gr. 5)
- Through art making, one’s sense of identity and community continually evolves. (Gr. 7)
- Identity is explored, expressed, and impacted through arts experiences. (Gr. 9)
Increase feelings of connection to others.
- People connect to others and share ideas through the arts. (Gr. 1)
- People connect to the hearts and minds of others in a variety of places and times through the arts. (Gr. 2)
- The arts connect our experiences to the experiences of others. (Gr. 3)
- Creative arts experiences can build community and nurture relationships with others. (Gr. 9)
Broadening perspectives and increasing perspective taking and empathy.
- Exploring works of art exposes us to diverse values, knowledge, and perspectives. (Gr. 4)
- Artists experiment in a variety of ways to discover new possibilities and perspectives. (Gr. 5)
- Experiencing art is a means to develop empathy for others’ perspectives and experiences. (Gr. 6)
- Experiencing art challenges our point of view and expands our understanding of others. (Gr. 7)
