The following table shows how five competencies from <em>Life Outside the Box<\/em> map onto the &#8220;big ideas&#8221; from the Arts education curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identity, voice, self and community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People create art to express\u00a0who they are as individuals and community. (K)<\/li>\n<li>Creative expression develops our unique identity and voice. (Gr. 2)<\/li>\n<li>Creative expression is a means to explore and share one\u2019s identity within a community.\u00a0(Gr. 4)<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in creative expression and experiences expands people\u2019s sense of identity and belonging.\u00a0(Gr. 5)<\/li>\n<li>Through art making, one\u2019s sense of identity and community continually evolves.\u00a0(Gr. 7)<\/li>\n<li>Identity is explored, expressed, and impacted through arts experiences.\u00a0\u00a0(Gr. 9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increase feelings of connection to others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People connect to others and share ideas through the arts. (Gr. 1)<\/li>\n<li>People connect to the hearts and minds of others in a variety of places and times through the arts.\u00a0(Gr. 2)<\/li>\n<li>The arts connect our experiences to the experiences of others.\u00a0(Gr. 3)<\/li>\n<li>Creative arts experiences can build community and nurture relationships with others.\u00a0\u00a0(Gr. 9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Broadening perspectives and increasing perspective taking and empathy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exploring works of art exposes us to diverse values, knowledge, and perspectives.\u00a0(Gr. 4)<\/li>\n<li>Artists experiment in a variety of ways to discover new possibilities and perspectives.\u00a0(Gr. 5)<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing art is a means to develop empathy for others\u2019 perspectives and experiences.\u00a0(Gr. 6)<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing art challenges our point of view and expands our understanding of others.\u00a0(Gr. 7)<\/li>\n<li>The arts provide opportunities to gain insight into the perspectives and experiences of people from a variety of times, places, and cultures.\u00a0\u00a0(Gr. 9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased personal skills, techniques,\u00a0<\/strong><b>competencies.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inquiry through the arts creates opportunities for risk taking.\u00a0(Gr. 2)<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in the arts develops people\u2019s ability to understand and express complex ideas.\u00a0(Gr. 7)<\/li>\n<li>Creative growth requires patience, readiness to take risks, and willingness to try new approaches.\u00a0(Gr. 8)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Creating social change through art expression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Artists often challenge the status quo and open us to new perspectives and experiences.\u00a0(Gr. 8)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life Outside the Box program overlaps with the B.C. curriculum from Kindergarten &#8211; Grade 9.
